Stuck On Campus? Here Are Fun Activities That Are Free For Students

By Daphne Britt on September 23, 2016

As a student at Florida State University who understands what it’s like to live on campus and who has experienced the complications of it, I know it can be frustrating. While achieving academic success can be stressful it can be rewarding to find what helps you relax.

I can’t count how many times I’ve had to deal with homework assignments with professors giving rushed lectures (knowing that no one understands anything when they ask the entire class “Was that clear?”). I’ve had multiple assignments or exams due at the same time within the same week (which I believe professors do this on purpose to see how quickly we will freak out). I’ve tried to get a computer in a library that is full of hundreds of students (who are on their laptops while literally sitting at one of the computers). I too have stayed up late at night to study for exams (yes, more than one on the exact same day) while drinking several cups of coffee just to stay awake throughout the day and making time to have fun. All this while being confined to living on campus because you have no personal transportation of your own to go out with friends to have fun.

But even though all of those things are frustrating at times, it does not mean that you are stuck with living on a boring campus. Our campus has so many fun and free activities for students to partake in that it is insane! So here are my picks of the most popular events that take place on our campus!

Askew Student Life Cinema

Wishing you and your friends could go to the movies but have no way there? Well the Askew Student Life Cinema at FSU hosts a variety of events and show recent movies every week! Unlike your local movie theater where you spend $20 for a ticket or $15 at the concession stand, at FSU’s Student Life Cinema tickets are free for students with their student I.D. and snacks at the concession stand are cheap. Plus you get to enjoy popcorn for $1 on every Tuesday.

They not only show movies but also host gaming events for video game lovers such as, “Pokémon: Garnet and Gold Edition” or their classic gaming event “Thursday Throwdown” along with a  variety of online games, board games, and game consoles for you to play!

Oglesby Union

Known as the Student Union, the Oglesby Union hosts events every week for all of its students and the local community to enjoy. From carnivals during each semester, to vendors selling varieties of products, free food, painting a pot, bowling, comedy shows, and live concerts, you will never be bored while on campus!

They also host FSU’s traditional events that unite our campus community such as Seminole Sensation Week, Homecoming, Haunted Harvest, and Spring Fling. If you’re interested in one or even all these amazing events, then you can believe that all of these events are free and inexpensive. Whether you’re in need of a new accessory in your dorm room or a fun activity for you and friends to enjoy, you can count on the student union for a variety of different events and entertainment for everyone!

Flying High Circus

This amazingly wonderful production is very popular on FSU’s campus. With flying acts to comedic scenes, the Flying High Circus is an exciting event that captures both art and entertainment.

According to their website, circus.fsu.edu, “The FSU Flying High Circus performs 70-80 shows throughout the year here in Tallahassee, at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mt., GA, and occasionally on the road in various locations.”

That’s a lot of performances! Their shows will have you so entranced that you’ll forget about not seeing any animals (which is cool because the shows are entertaining without the beautiful creatures). FSU’s Flying High Circus allows students to experience creative and jaw dropping routines, especially during the fall semester when they host their magnificent “Halloween Show Series,” as you get to see spooky and fun stunts by the performers.

But best of all, tickets are free for FSU students as long as they have their student I.D. and a wristband!

School of Theater — Fine Arts

If you’re a fan of artistic theater and musical plays with classic performances then the School of Theater at FSU is for you! Putting on a stellar show every month for students, the local community, and visiting tourists, the theater productions at FSU are the most highly anticipated productions on campus.

With different shows in a variety of genres such as the School of Theaters’ play “All Shook Up” or the School of Dance’s production “An Evening of Dance,” there’s fun for everyone! Plus for FSU students tickets are inexpensive.

According to their website tickets.fsu.edu, “The Fine Arts Ticket Office offers discounted tickets to students to many performances during its season. Ticket prices range from $5-25 depending on the event,” so as long as you have your student I.D you can purchase a ticket!

So whenever you feel the pressures from your daily classes and weekly studies, know that our campus has lots of exciting events for you and your friends to have the best fun college experience ever!
